The new smartphone application Waze is the first free provider of maps and real-time traffic information in the US. The technology behind it, collecting GPS points as users drive around, is the same crowdsourcing technique that other paid services rely on for their information. Waze is free because all the information it provides is user-generated, while other paid services have a variety of sources from which they collect their traffic information. If Waze is able to rally enough supporters, it just might be able to give the traditional navigation device companies a run for their money. Enjoy this preview video:
